I just came across a post that rang so true that I had to write my own post about it, because I don’t want the same thing to happen to you.

When I first started learning about Internet Marketing, way back in 2003, I had the dream of making money on the Internet. I had a full-time job, a wife and three young children.

I got fixated with the dream, having read so much about people making millions on the Internet and I wanted a piece of it. I would spend hours of my spare time on my computer and ignored things that were going on around me, including my family.

I had convinced myself that I was doing it for my family, to make their lives easier, and even though I wasn’t making much money from all that work, I still held onto the dream.

And then, after almost three years of this, my wife decided enough was enough, and up sticks and left taking our children with her.

Now, I’m not going to go into what happened after that, suffice to say that we are still friends and I get to spend time with my almost every day, but the take away of this for you is yes have a dream, yes work to make money on the Internet (because it can be done), but don’t do it at the expense of everyone around you. Don’t spend all your spare time on forums, doing keyword research and building websites.

The worst part of it is that my story is not unique, I have seen many such stories on the Internet and I don’t want it to happen to you. Have a plan, set your hours, tell your family that during those hours you are working, but balance that work with quality time with your family, even if you just spend that time watching TV with them, or playing with your children.

Please don’t repeat my story!

The thing is, many people don’t now how to best use LinkedIn to promote themselves and connect with others without coming across as a spammer.

The way to use LinkedIn, as with other marketing, is to establish yourself as an expert in your field. But how do you do that?

By having the perfect profile, linking with groups, and providing great and useful information . But I’m not yet an expert in using LinkedIn, in fact although I’ve been on there for a while, I haven’t really used it that much.

As I’ve mentioned in other posts, PLR is great, because it is pre-written and just requires a little tweaking to get your own message across.

What I like about this Offline PLR Package is that it is very informative and because I wanted it for a Mobile website, I’m not too bothered about duplicate content. This morning I showed the Mobile website to a client and he commented on how good and informative the articles are, and within a couple of  hours, I had a telephone call from someone that my client knows, who had shown the articles too! Bam a new client.

When most people first start looking into making money online, they do searches on terms like “work from home”, “work at home”, “make money online”, and “make money from home”, or other such terms.

Doing Internet searches on these terms will provide you with thousands of options, far too many to quickly digest and what generally happens is that you get so confused that you just give up. Don’t let this happen to you. It is possible for anyone to make money online, no matter what your experiences or education level, if you can use a computer, have access to the Internet, are willing to learn and have determination and patience, then you can do it.

But to do it, you need a plan, and good quality guidance that shows you step by step what you should be doing each day.

One of the mistakes that many people who enter Internet marketing, is thinking that one website will bring them a ton of money. And as that is possibly true, when you are starting out, it is in my opinion, better to spend a few hours each day on one website and then just repeat the process the next day on a different website.

Do this for 5 days a week and you will have 5 websites, or 20 in one month, all with the potential to make you money.

You see, if you have 10 websites each earning you $100 per month, that’s $1000 each month. If you build 20 websites and 10 of them make you $100 per month and the other 10 make you $50, that’ll make you a non-too shabby $1500 per month. If all 20 make you money, then you’ll be earning $2000 a month.

So it is far better than trying to make loads of money off of one website. And, the more you do it, the quicker you will get at building them! And the more you build the more potential you have for building your income online.

So the plan – well I did think about writing a long article or ebook on the subject, but to be honest there are many people who will show you a better plan than I could write, and one of those is Kelly Riley, once known as The Rich Jerk. Kelly has put together a great plan and called it Bring The Fresh (bit of weird name!), but don’t let that fool you.

So today I did some digging to learn more about it, and here are my findings.

The best kind of website you can have, is one where visitors are engaged enough that they keep coming back on a regular basis. But to do that you need to regularly add new content to it, and there lies the problem that a lot of website owners have – where to get great content ideas and adding good quality content. Blog curation is a solution to that problem.

What is blog curation?

Blog curation is similar to what has been known as autoblogging. Autoblogging is simply setting up a wordpress blog and automatically taking content from other websites and adding it your own website. The downside of autoblogging is that most of the content that is automatically posted to your website is rubbish. So your website will fill up with bad content that is of no real interest to your visitors and does not give them much reason to return. Also, search engines do not like autoblogs and Google has been deindexing autoblogs left right and center, quite rightly, in my view!

Blog curation is different to autobloging in that you, the website owner actually review the content BEFORE it is published on your website.

It’s like being the curator of a museum, or art gallery curator. These people are regularly presented with items to exhibit, but they only want to show the quality exhibits that are of interest to their visitors. Blog curation is very similar.

You, the blog curator will spend an hour a day, sifting through the Internet looking for quality articles, videos or other content to publish on your website. The twist is that you add your own thoughts on the content, therefore making the content unique for your visitors.

You also should not take the content of others and publish it on your website, you could get in trouble with copyright issues! But to do blog curation effectively, you link to the original content source. For instance you could quote a paragraph from the source and add you take on it but never forgetting to link back to the source.

You may be put off though, because finding the good stuff from all the garbage on the Internet could be very time consuming, but there are tools available that help you find the content, saving you an enormous amount of time. In fact, if you use these tools it should take you no-more than an hour a day to add the new content to your website.

Creating digital products to sell on the Internet can be a very time consuming and complex venture. But making money with Private Label Rights products gives you a head start.

You see, a simple ebook to sell shouldn’t take more than a few hours to create (if you are a good writer) but if, for instance, you have a great idea for a WordPress plugin, well that is most likely going to take some time to do, as well as cost you quite a bit of money, if you don’t have the technical skills to right software products.

However, there are some very simple steps that you can take to secure WordPress websites, and here they are.

1) Always have the latest version of WordPress.

The guys at WordPress have made it extremely easy to upgrade your WordPress website. Simply click the link at the top of your dashboard and it only takes a few seconds, so there is no real excuse for not keeping your website up to date!

2) Do not use admin as your main login username.

When you initially install WordPress, either using fantastico on cpanel, or any other method, DO NOT set your username to admin. This is the default user name and probably 90% of WordPress users use it, therefore making it extremely easy to guess the username!

The main admin username cannot be changed from within WordPress, once it has been set. If you have already got your WordPress website up using admin as the main user name, you will have to change it in the database using phpMySQL.

3) Remove unnecessary files.

Once you install WordPress, there are a few files that are no longer needed, but are left on your server. These files can make it extremely easy for hackers to get into your website, so make sure you delete them from your server. The main ones are:

readme.html located in the public_html folder.

install.php located in the wp-admin folder.

install-helper.php located in the wp-admin folder.

4) Move wp-config.php to your server root folder.

The file wp-config.php contains your WordPress database user name and password. By default it is located in the public_html folder, and can be easily accessed by hackers. The first thing to do is make sure that it’s permissions are set to 600, this makes it so that it cannot be run from outside of your website, ie by hackers.

The second thing to do is move the file to root folder of your server. You can do this using either your servers cpanel (if it has one) or via an FTP program like Filezilla. By moving it to the root you will make sure that hackers cannot access it.

Side note: I have had a problem doing this in that when I moved it and revisted the website, I started getting error messages. This is caused by some FTP programs adding blank lines to the file when it was moved. If you have the same problem, just edit the file in your cpanel or FTP program and remove any blank lines after the ?> at the end of the file.

5) Remove the error message from your login page.

An easy way for hackers to find out your username is via the error message that appears on the the WordPress login page when an incorrect username or password is entered. For instance, if someone goes to your login page and uses the username admin but gets the password error message, they are already half way to finding out what your login details are!

An easy way to correct this is to remove the code that generates the error message altogether. To do this use your cpanel file manager or FTP software to find the following code in file wp-login.php, in your public_html folder.

echo ‘<div id=”login_error”>’ . apply_filters(‘login_errors’, $errors) . “</div>\n”;
if ( !empty($messages) )
echo ‘<p>’ . apply_filters(‘login_messages’, $messages) . “</p>\n”;

You can safely remove red line above, and this will remove any messages that might appear if a wrong username or password is entered. Alternatively, you could change the code between the dots to something like “Login failed, please try again”, like this:

if ( !empty($errors) )
echo ‘<div id=”login_error”>’ . “Login failed, please try again”. “</div>\n”;
if ( !empty($messages) )
echo ‘<p>’ . apply_filters(‘login_messages’, $messages) . “</p>\n”;

This way, hackers will not know whether it is the username or the password or both that are incorrect.

One thing to note about WordPress website security is that each time you upgrade to a newer version, you will need to redo these tasks again, which is a bit of a pain, but the few minutes it takes to do is worth it when compared with rebuilding a hacked website!

Having said that, having to redo the above steps every time WordPress is upgraded brings you a great opportunity to make money.

You see, there are a huge amount of small businesses that use WordPress for their business. Some of them may be in your local area. If you use the methods outlined in this great WordPress security package, you can have these business owners paying you to create their secure WordPress websites!

If you are looking for a quick online money-making method and you have a talent, or skill that people are willing to pay $5 for then you will definitely want to check out Fiverr.com. Even if you don’t have a talent or skill, there are many people making money with Fiverr doing things like sending postcards from exotic locations, or advertising on their cars or even body parts. It is actually humorous to browse this site just to see some of the strange things people will do for $5.

As a webmaster, I absolutely love this site because it is easy to find people who will do website related gigs such as graphic design, link building and advertising just to name a few. Although, for only $5 sometimes you are not quite sure what you are going to get but you’re only out $5 if you are not happy with the final product. Besides, buyers can always base their decision on the sellers feedback comments.

Fiverr’s feedback system is similar to that of eBay’s. If the seller of a gig delivers what they promised in a timely manner, then buyers are urged to leave feedback for the seller. Sellers with good feedback history tend to make more sales than new sellers with no or little feedback because the buyers have more confidence that the sellers will deliver as promised.

If you want to make money with Fiverr, first determine what your talents and skills are. Can you do something relatively quickly that other people would pay $5 for? You may also want to browse around Fiverr.com to see what other types of gigs people are making money with. You may be surprised how simple some of them are. Here is a list of ideas:

Graphic design – Webmasters and advertisers are always on the lookout for good graphic designers to design banners, ads, logos, favicon images, etc. If you are good with photo editing software you may want to consider this.

Writing or editing articles – Blogging and article marketing these days are huge and webmasters are always looking for good quality content. If you can write good quality articles fast, you could make killing on Fiverr.

Create a video and post it to YouTube – Video is really big these days and if you have some basic video editing skills, you can offer this as a service to others.

Post comments or reviews – You could offer to post a number of comments or reviews of a product or website.

Promote a product or website to your social network – If you have a large number of followers on Facbook or Twitter, you could offer to promote someone’s product, website, blog, fan page, etc. to your social network for $5. These are very popular gigs on Fiverr because it results in very cheap advertising for the buyers.

Create a “How to” eBook or report and sell it for $5 – This one is nice because you can keep sending the same file to everyone who purchases it. You basically do the work once and profit from it many times.

Offline Advertising – Offer to post flyers or come up with other creative advertising methods for your buyers.

These are just a handful of different methods to make money with Fiverr. Hopefully you can see the value of this website and are able to use your talents and skills to quickly turn up some extra cash. Who knows, maybe you will come up with something new and creative that will be desired by many and give your bank account the big boost that it needs.
